MaryAnn Augoustatos is an educator. Her field of specialty is high school mathematics and international school administration. Born and raised in Manhattan, New York and being of Greek descent she has spent 32 years as an educator at the American Community Schools of Athens Greece ( ACS Athens). She holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a Masters of Arts in Education. She is a certified International School Administrator and has received her secondary mathematics teaching certification from the State of New York.
She is currently the Director of the Learning Commons at ACS Athens, an entity in our school that she was instrumental in co-establishing. The Learning Commons is the center of student and faculty collaboration, learning, research and knowledge construction at ACS Athens. This learning space provides our students and faculty with state of the art facilities, such as a media studio, a math and science studio, a writing/research studio, an incubator of students’ creative ideas and more. These spaces are staffed with professionals having expertise in the fields of Mathematics, all Sciences, Writing, Research, Literacy, STEAM education, and Media. Students and faculty function as architects of their own learning as they pursue their intellectual curiosities. As referred to by a faculty member, the Learning Commons is becoming the heartbeat of education at ACS Athens.
Prior to being a Director of the learning Commons, she spent almost a decade as a Middle School principal at ACS Athens.
Upon entering ACS Athens she taught mathematics for 20 years and spent 16 years of her instructional career as the Mathematics Department Chair having created the position of Elementary School Math Specialist and the ACS Athens Mathematics Competition as a few of her highlights. Her teaching experience consists of High School Mathematics courses throughout all academic levels with an emphasis on IB and Honors level courses. Two years prior to becoming Principal, she assumed the position of JK-12 Technology Department Chair concurrently.
Ms. Augoustatos has also served as a team member on the Committee of Institution-wide Accreditation of the Middle School Association of Colleges and School (MSA). Additionally, She is currently a chair of the Middle States Association and has conducted visits for the organization. For years, she also held the position of JK-12 Academic Department Chair Council Coordinator and began a completed and full curriculum review process for all courses school-wide.
Marina Papaioannou was born and raised in New York. She attended New York University, where she earned a Bachelors of Arts and Sciences in Classical Civilizations & Hellenic Studies, and Political Science, with a minor in Economics. From there, Marina attended Pace University Law School, where she obtained a Law Degree and is currently a certified practicing Attorney in the State of New York, Greece, Great Britain and all Commonwealth Nations worldwide. While in Law School, Marina worked for the District Attorney’s office, as well as a Battered Women's Shelter, counseling women and children, who were the victims of Domestic Violence.
In addition to Marina’s love of the Law, she has also always enjoyed working with children and studying the psychology of children and families. Therefore, she enrolled in LaSalle University, Athens Campus, where she is currently on the path of obtaining a Masters in Psychology. Furthermore, she also holds a Substitute Teaching Certificate in the State of Tennessee, where she taught K-12 for five years.
Marina is currently the Administrative Assistant to the Director of the Learning Commons and is located in the front desk of the Sabbagh Library.
Marietta Garbis was born and raised in Montreal, Canada. She completed a program of Business Studies at Lasalle College in Montreal.
She has been at ACS Athens since 1992, and has served as the Academy Attendance Officer and in administrative support roles in the Academy and Middle School offices and Student Services. She is currently the Administrative Assistant to the Dean of the Institute for Innovation & Creativity.
Born in Italy, Dr. Marco Crivellaro holds a BA and a PhD in Classics from the University of Ferrara (Italy), an MA in Cultural Studies from the University of Nevada, Reno (U.S.A), and is completing a Master in Information and Library Sciences from the University of Seattle, Washington (U.S.A.) A certified ESL teacher, he's also a member of the IATI (Italian Association of Translators and interpreters), and of the IAMPETH (International Association of Master Penmen, Engrossers and Teachers of Handwriting).
He has worked in Italy, the U.S.A., France, Monaco, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, and Singapore teaching Comparative Literature, History (with an emphasis on the Renaissance and American History), Ancient Greek, Latin, Classical Civilization, Literary Humanities, Western Civilization, Italian Literature, Art History, Philosophy and English as a Second Language.
Dr. Crivellaro's interests primarily focus on the cultural continuity of the classical heritage in the modern and contemporary society. He joined ACS in 2018 as a Social Studies Substitute Teacher and Writing Studio Assistant, he has conducted seminars about reference management softwares, and a course of Italian for Native Speakers. For the year 2019-2020 he will coordinate the library and its activities, with the goal of making it a multitasking hub for academically reliable and ethically conducted researches.
In his tenth year at ACS Athens, Mr. Kalogridakis was born and raised in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He received his Bachelor of Arts in History from Rutgers University in NJ, then his Masters of Arts in Teaching from Boston University, and holds both Massachusetts and New Jersey teaching certifications. He has also completed extended course work for a Masters in Clinical Psychology from the University of Indianapolis.
Having worked as an Academy Counselor for 6 years, Mr. Kalogridakis is in his 4th year with 6th - 8th grade students, as the Middle School Counselor. Past advisor of the National Honor Society, Model United Nations club, and Student Council advisor, he is also an active coach of after school recreational teams under the Athletic Department.
Ms. Karatza earned a B.A in Early Childhood Education from the University of Athens and she has also completed courses in the field of Psychology on Learning Disabilities and Psychology of Emotions during her studies at the Italian University of Padova. Ms. Karatza has also completed her M.A. in Information and Communication Technology in Education from the University of Athens, University of Thessaly and Technological Education Institute of Piraeus. The title of her dissertation was "Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as a Tool of Differentiated Instruction: An Informative Intervention and a Comparative Study on Educators’ Views and Extent of ICT Use”. The research was presented at the 7th International Conference on Education and Management Innovation in Italy as well as published in the International Journal of Information and Education Technology.
Her interest for continuous training and professional development led her to attend many training courses and conferences such as: Educational and Psychological Measurements in Special Education (George Washington University), Conceptual Math Training for grades K-2, Special Educational Needs (British Council), Supporting children with difficulties in reading and writing (University of London, UCL Institute of Education and Dyslexia International), Inspiring Young People In STEM: Resources and Diversity (National Stem Learning Centre), and the First International Conference "Play on Early Education".
Ms. Karatza strongly believes that children learn new things by exploring and discovering and love to solve problems during play and in daily activities. For that reason, as a STEM teacher who teaches Coding (Robotics) and Engineering to kindergarten students, Ms. Karatza is excited to guide young learners to build their background knowledge, connect it to real-life situations while they develop their imagination, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Ms. Karatza is the Coordinator of the Early Childhood Programs (in Coding) and she is responsible for developing the curriculum, implementing it as well as training the new STEM teachers.
Ms. Karatza has had the opportunity to work with learners across grade levels at ACS Athens as an assistant to the Optimal Learning Program (OLP) for Elementary School, Middle School, and Academy. Having worked with Elementary Students for the past two years as an OLP assistant, she has gained valuable experience in supporting students with learning differences, empowering them to reach their fullest academic potential. She has also been involved in many aspects of school life as an after- school program instructor as well as the ES House System Coordinator. This year she will be the Elementary School Permanent Substitute Teacher and she is very excited!
Anna Kompothekra received her B.S. degree in Economics majoring in International and European Economics from Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) (Greece) in 2007 and her M.S. degree in Economics in 2011 from the same university. For one semester she studied at Corvinus University of Budapest, Hungary, as part of the Erasmus student exchange program. She earned her Teacher’s Certificate from the School of Pedagogical and Technological Education of Athens (Greece) in 2018.
Ms. Kompothekra is currently pursuing a PhD degree in Economics at Athens University of Economics and Business, where she has worked as a teaching and research assistant for the past five years. Her research interests include Economic history, Human Capital and Training, Political Economy, Economic Development and Cultural Economics. She also worked as a consultant in Vocational Education and Training and EU funded projects and has taught Mathematics and Economics to students of all grades.

Mr. Athanasios Palos-Papantonopoulos was born in Sydney, Australia and raised in Athens, Greece.
His studies include a Certificate in Audio Description 2008 ADA London, EAVE post graduate studies in Cinema production 1994 and Interactive Media 1995, B.A in Cinema CCNY City University 1984, a diploma in Television BBC London 1980, an HND diploma in Cinema 1980. Teacher for Cinema & TV courses from 1986 to 2003 in Cinema & TV School ‘Papantonopoulos’. TV producer from 1987, Co-founder of AKTIS AVteam from 1999.

Danai Papaioannou earned her Bachelor's degree in Greek language and literature from the University of Athens. Upon the completion of her studies, she enrolled in a one-year program at the same university, which resulted in a certificate in Special Education, seeking to gain deeper knowledge in inclusive practices. Ms. Papaioannou also completed extensive training in Mindfulness, as she firmly believes that training our attention to experience the present moment with greater curiosity and kindness helps to provide new possibilities to identify and overcome difficulties. In August 2018, she finished a Master's degree on Psychology and Neuroscience of Mental Health from King's College London.
Ms. Papaioannou has been a member of ACS Athens since 2015. She has worked as the Student Affairs Officer promoting learning through service and has also served as the Administrative Assistant of the office. This will be her second year as the Academy/Middle School OLP Specialist, supporting students to develop their talents and build collaborative relationships in their learning environment. She will be also working in the Learning Commons as the Enhancement Programs Coordinator.
Michela Martines holds dual citizenship from Italy and Norway. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Sussex. For her academic achievements, she received a full scholarship to complete her Master's degree from the same university in Clinical Psychology and Mental Health. She is currently continuing her studies through a four-year training and supervision program in Rational-Emotive and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with children, adolescents, parents and educators at the Hellenic Institute for RECBT.
Ms. Martines has been a member of the ACS Athens community since 2017. She has held various positions including elementary school counseling intern, shadow teacher and substitute teacher. This is her second year as a member of the OLP Department.
Ms. Antonia Pentoti holds a B. Sc. in Mathematics from the University of Patras (2004), with the highest grade of the graduation year and a M. Sc. in Mathematical Modeling in Modern Technologies and Finance from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) (2006). Her Final Project was a combination of Applied Mathematics and Fluid Mechanics under the title "Modeling of the slip condition in micro-channel flows".
During the past 19 years she had the opportunity to teach Mathematics to students of different grades and levels, preparing them to succeed in the University entrance examinations, as well as working with University students. This is her second year at ACS Athens. This year she assumed the Math / Science Studio Coordinator position. Her goal is to interconnect Sciences, so that students realize that everything is needed both in academic and real life.
She has attended numerous summer schools centered on Complexity and Chaos (Nonlinear Dynamics) and workshops on General Didactics and Pedagogies. She speaks Greek, English and Italian.
Alberto Pisante was born and raised in Athens, Greece. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Cardiff University and is qualified as an EFL teacher by Cambridge CELTA. After joining the ACS faculty this year, he willl be splitting his responsibilities between teaching in the Academy and being an assistant in the Learning Commons' writing studio.
His passion for Literature and Film began at school, flourished at university and eventually landed back in the classroom. This year he will be teaching Perspectives in Literature, Film Writing/Production as well as a Writing Seminar.
Ms. Dimitra Psoma holds a Greek Language and Literature Bachelor’s Degree from the National University of Athens (Greece) majoring in Linguistics (2012), and a Master of Arts in Translation from the University of New Hampshire (USA) (2015).
Ms. Psoma has been teaching English and Greek to students of all levels, as well as preparing students for their university Entrance Exams. Last year, she taught Greek for both Middle School and Academy and also served as the Writing Studio Assistant. This year, she assumed the Writing Studio Supervisor position. This is her third year at ACS Athens.

- Translation of a management manual.
Ms. Katerina Saini studied Mathematics at the University of Patras, Greece. She earned a Master’s degree in Special Education from Bridgewater State University, MA, in 2014.
She has a 5-year experience in general and special education in the United States which spans Grades 6 to 12. She holds a Massachusetts teaching license in both Special Education and Mathematics for Grades 5-12. Throughout her career, she had the opportunity to teach students from different educational and cultural backgrounds and she is experienced in developing different strategies and approaches by identifying each student’s unique learning style. She has also worked as an instructional skills coach for the after school program Coaching for Change.
She has been a member of ACS Athens since 2019 as a Math substitute teacher.
Ms. Saini was born and raised in Athens, Greece, loves music and dancing. She has been a traditional Greek dancer since 1995.
Mr. Simos Sylaidis was born in Gutersloh a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany and raised in Athens, Greece.
His studies include an HND diploma in Direction of photography in Cinema & TV 1979.

Ms. Evangelia Theofilou obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2016) and her Masters Degree in Environmental Health from the Medical school of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (2018) with the highest degree in her class.
She has worked as an analytical researcher in the National Center of Scientific Research "Democritos" and at the University of Birmingham about toxicological topics like the
"Cancinogenic impact of aflatoxins in peanuts" and "Skin toxicity from anticancer therapies".
Apart from teaching analytical & environmental chemistry laboratory courses to younger scholars at the university, the last few years she teaches chemistry to junior and high school students.
She is a holder of QTS (Qualified Teacher Status-UK) and speaks Greek,English and French. She likes swimming, dancing and traveling.

Ms. Tsopoglou-Gkina holds a Biology Bachelor Degree from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) majoring in Environmental Biology (2011) and a Master of Science in Environmental Biology from Utrecht University (the Netherlands) (2013). She is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Western Macedonia (Greece) conducting research in the field of Biology Education.
Ms. Tsopoglou-Gkina has been working in education since 2014, with experience in Environmental Education programs, as well as teaching Biology. She has been a member of ACS Athens since 2016 as a Science and Math substitute in residence, while this year she will also be teaching Health in the Academy.
