Clubs & Activities 2018-2019

ACS Athens offers a plethora of activities to students where they can hone their leadership, communication, academic, and artistic skills amongst others. Students sign up for clubs and activities during Activity Kick Off Day, which is carried out within the first month of the school year.

Students are always encouraged to come to the Office of Student Affairs, should they feel the need to propose a new club/activity or discuss existing clubs/activities and finding the right fit for them.

Academy

  • 9th Grade Student Council:

    The 9th grade Student Council aims to increase leadership level amongst students and guide 9th graders throughout the year.

  • 10th Grade Student Council:

    The 10th Grade Student Council aims in preparing students to be responsible, ready, and respectful in taking care of their peers' needs and wants.

  • 11th Grade Student Council:

    The 11th Grade Student Council will be writing proposals, organizing goals, planning activities, and acting as leaders throughout the school year, working together towards a common goal.

  • 12th Grade Student Council:

    The Senior Class Student Council aims in encouraging and engaging students to get involved in meaningful experiences, to ensure the greatest participation by students, to teach the values of working in a democracy, and to voice their opinion.

  • IB Student Council:

    IB Student Council aims to provide guidance and suppport for all IB students and organizes a student-to-student forum for Seniors to discuss with Juniors what year 2 of the IBDP entails, how they could best avoid pitfalls and meet deadlines.

  • National Honor Society (NHS):

    The NHS aims to help students learn about leadership, service, and character and build on those aspects within ACS.

  • 1.50 Club:

    The student-led 1.50 club works together with the Prolepsis Institute to raise awareness for the Food Aid.

  • American Community Choir (ACC):

    The participants in the ACS Community Choir will undergo instructions on breathing, posture, and sound as well as a wide variety of singing literature from the classical to the modern realms.

  • Art Club:

    The Art Club works on collaborative projects and learns to develop creative skills.

  • Basketball Club:

    The Basketball Club passes on the teamwork spirit while improving skills and physical activity level by helping each other during the game.

  • Bottle Caps Club:

    The student-led Bottle Caps Club aims in collecting bottle caps for people who have gotten into accidents and are in need of wheelchairs. The bottle caps that will be collected will be given to this cause.

  • Charity Club:

    The Charity Club fundraises for charities involving orphans and visits with children there. The aim is to raise awareness and funds to support children and organizations in need.

  • Chess/Backgammon Club:

    In the Chess/Backgammon club, students will be playing with peers across grade levels, switching games from week to week. The is also a possibility of creating a tournament or championship in the future.

  • Dance Club:

    The Dance Club teaches students the basic steps for Latin and American style dancing and how to implement these steps into a choreography.

  • Duet Acting:

    This Forensics club introduces students to a more conceptual approach regarding the teaching of dramatic or non-dramatic material.

  • Forensics Debate:

    This Forensics club prepares students for the annual Forensics tournament that will take place in Athens this year.

  • Group Discussion:

    This Forensics club guides students through research, informed conversation and teaches students the art of discussion. Students will also be trained in the most valuable group discussion skill: reaching solutions to real world problems.

  • HS Band:

    The High School Band focuses on detailed performances of specific music genres, usually rock and funk.

  • IB Visual Artists Club:

    IB Visual Arts 1 & 2 students exchange ideas, practice their techniques and sometimes go to Art Events together. The learning objectives better the quality of their studio work and become more knowledgeable on the art scene.

  • Impromptu:

    This Forensics club coaches students to write original speeches on very personal/important topics, such as gender roles, modern cynicism, and family.

  • Koinwnos:

    The student-led Koinwnos club aims in building awareness in the community, engaging the students in meaningful experiences by helping the homeless and giving back to their community to teach the significance of service and making a difference.

  • Literary Arts Magazine:

    The Literary Arts Magazine aims to build a stronger sense of community by publishing a magazine of creative expression.

  • Media Club:

    The Media Club aims to produce inquisitive information, necessary to the students and community, in online and perhaps print publications.

  • Model United Nations:

    The MUN recruites new delegates and trains them in the skills of MUN (team preparation, debate, research, written communication etc).

  • Movie Club:

    The Movie Club discusses movies of all varieties, including animated, blockbusters and classics. The Annual Oscars pool will be done, where the proceeds are donated.

  • Oral Interpretation:

    This Forensics club gives life to the texts students select while the advisor will be providing consistent guidance.

  • Original Oratory:

    This Forensics club prepares students for the tournament in Thessaloniki and encourages students to speak their mind with structured thoughts and well-supported arguments.

  • Percussion Group: The Percussion Group rehearses complex rhythmic works, culminating to concert presentations. The aim of this group is to develop complex rhythmic understanding.

  • Ping Pong Club:

    The Ping Pong Club showcases the benefits of the sport and brings out another athletic option for a lot of students who do not normally participate in athletics.

  • Save the Wave:

    The student-led Save the Wave club organizes fundraises to give to marine

    organizations that support marine life.

  • TED-Ed Club:

    The TED-Ed Club aims in engaging students in a well-rounded process of building public speaking and presentation skills while providing opportunities to ask questions, research, share ideas, and create a formal culminating TED-Ed event to which parents, classmates, and community will be invited.

  • UNESCO:

    Greek students participate in the annual UNESCO Symposium at the end of February, hosted by one of the Associated Schools on a rotating basis. Global and social issues (defined by UNESCO) are approached in group discussions where a resolution is presented in the General Assembly of the Symposium. Through this process, students are familiarized with the institutions of democracy while acquiring global and social awareness.

  • Weight Training Club:

    The Weight Training Club aims in promoting a healthy lifestyle while creating determined mindsets.

  • Yearbook Club:

    Students will be developing their creativity and their time management skills while finding and creating these year’s yearbook.

  • Art Club:

    The Art Club aims in creating a safe space for students to explore their love for art and to create artwork together.

  • Blossom Memories Club:

    Student-led Blossom Memories club is a space where students write their own short-story script and eventually film it.

  • Business Club:

    The student-led Business Club aims in assisting Middle School students improve their knowledge on business and marketing.

    The Middle School dance club focuses on ballet, modern and contemporary dance, where all students feel welcomed and become comfortable being vulnerable around each other.

  • Decoupage and other crafts:

    In the Decoupage and other crafts club, students learn about and create home-made decorative objects using decoupage materials. Students have a project each month to create a seasonally appropriate craft they can take home or use in various settings.

  • Executive Student Council:

    The Middle School Executive Student Council teaches leadership, responsibility, readiness, respect and demonstrates these virtues.

  • Honor Code Club:

    The Honor Code Club spreads the word about ACS’ culture of Respect. This club focuses on being a role model for the rest of the Middle School, fosters inclusion of all students and promotes ideas for service on the ACS Athens campus.

  • Lab for All:

    Exposure to conducting experiments, terminology, and procedure that will be useful for their first year in the Academy.

  • Middle School Debate:

    The MS Debate club aims to create an official, vibrant MS debate community that will participate in several young debater tournaments throughout the year.

  • Programming/Tech Club:

    The Programming/Tech Club will give students the opportunity to take part in programming challenges and perhaps competitions.

  • Science Club:

    The Science Club participates in the NESA Virtual Science Fair. Students use this time to complete experiments they find interesting and fascinating.

  • Service Leaders:

    The Service Leaders Club keeps students informed about various needs within our community and city that includes, but is not necessarily limited to, the needs amongst refugees in Athens. Students exemplify their commitment through their attendance, enthusiasm, and effort, in order to make this a meaningful experience for those directly involved, as well as the people who are helped through the student service.

  • S.T.A.R.T Club:

    The S.T.A.R.T club strives to help animals that are less fortunate and live a healthy and loved life. This club aims to raise awareness about stray animals and the way everyone can help them.

  • Ultimate Frisbee Club:

    The Ultimate Frisbee Club engages students in the sport and teaches them the rules, strategies, and tactics to create a Middle School Frisbee team. Students can learn a new sport in a fun and non-competitive environment.

    Meeting Day: Club is split into 2 groups - Group 1 meets on Wednesday during lunch in the back field or gym and Group 2 meets on Friday during lunch in the back field or gym.

  • Yearbook:

    The Yearbook club puts together the school’s Middle School Yearbook, which is a creative, fun, and great opportunity for students to exhibit and develop a variety of skills (leadership, creativity, art, writing, teamwork, ect).

  • Honor Code:

    The ES Honor Code club tackles issues such as recycling, positive behavior, and positive public service announcements.
