Two simple words - “What if…?” - can open the door to imagination and endless possibilities. That was the message shared with elementary students when Canadian author and proud ACS Athens alumnus, John Danakas, returned to campus for an inspiring visit.

The day began with a lively presentation in the ACS Athens Theater, where Mr. Danakas spoke to all Grades 3–4 students about his journey as a writer and the power of storytelling. Later, in smaller sessions held in the library, he met with each grade individually, allowing students to ask questions and share their thoughts.

Mr. Danakas, author of seven books for young readers, is known for stories that explore sports, friendships, and teamwork. He spoke about how his love for reading developed into a lifelong passion for writing, and how his move from Canada to Greece as a young child sparked his imagination and storytelling voice.

Encouraging students to write from their own experiences, he reminded them that the best stories often come from real life - from family, friendships, and the challenges that shape who we are. He explained that strong writing engages all five senses and grows from curiosity about the world around us.

Mr. Danakas also emphasized that writing is a collaborative process, sharing how authors work closely with editors and illustrators to bring stories to life. He explained that editors help writers strengthen their ideas and refine their work, offering valuable tips along the way.

The visit concluded with smiles and excitement as students met the author and received signed copies of his books. One student was so inspired by Mr. Danakas’s visit that he drew a picture suggesting a new book title for him. Mr. Danakas was delighted and kindly offered to create the illustration for it.

The experience encouraged students to see writing as a space for discovery - where imagination transforms ideas and experiences into stories.
