At ACS Athens, the commitment to developing conscious global citizens begins early—and is grounded in both academic and emotional growth. Three of our elementary school educators, Vicki Klimou, Iliana Eleftheriou, and Athena Stavropoulos, have taken this mission to heart by leading the way with a dynamic, school-wide initiative titled “Building Conscious Citizens: SEL Strategies to Teach Life Skills (Grades K–5).” They recently presented their strategies at the NESA 2025 Learning Futures Summit, held at ACS Athens.
Rooted in research-based approaches such as Growth Mindset, Positive Discipline, and Mindfulness, this initiative introduces a custom Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum that fosters life skills and character development in meaningful, age-appropriate ways.
The curriculum is thoughtfully designed to align with developmental needs and is differentiated across grade levels. It supports students in taking ownership of their learning while developing the self-awareness, empathy, and resilience that are essential for navigating an increasingly complex world.
Each month, students engage with specific SEL themes through a consistent framework that includes:
- “Mindset Monday” lessons that set the tone for the week
- Teacher modeling of emotional intelligence and reflective behaviors
- Classroom practices that encourage inclusion, problem-solving, and personal responsibility
Through these strategies, educators are not only teaching skills but also creating inclusive, engaged classroom environments that serve as microcosms of the respectful, collaborative societies we hope our students will help shape.
The SEL initiative stands as a testament to the power of intentional, values-driven teaching and the dedication of our faculty to educating the whole child.
