Pittas, Evelyn, Director of IB/AP
Evelyn Pittas is a highly experienced international educator and educational leader with more than 25 years of service within the International Baccalaureate (IB) community. She currently serves as the IB / AP Director at ACS Athens, bringing to the role extensive experience as an IB educator, Diploma Examiner, curriculum developer, Teacher Support Material contributor, and academic administrator. Previously, she served for five years as Academy Vice Principal at ACS Athens, where she combined strategic leadership with pedagogical expertise to advance academic excellence, faculty development, student achievement, and global citizenship.
Ms. Pittas holds a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Lehigh University, Pennsylvania, a Master of Arts in English Literature from Kutztown University, Pennsylvania, and a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Gwynedd-Mercy College. She earned her U.S. Secondary Teaching Certification in 1994 and is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Educational Leadership (Ed.D.) at the University of Nicosia, Cyprus. Her doctoral research examines the integration of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within international education, with particular attention to sustainability, curriculum, and the development of globally competent and consciously engaged learners.
Her formal journey with the International Baccalaureate began in 1999, when she became an IB English A2 teacher, later transitioning to English A: Language and Literature at both Higher and Standard Levels. Since 2004, she has served as an IB Diploma Examiner for Group 1 and the Extended Essay, a role she continues to hold. More than two decades of examining have provided her with extensive insight into IB assessment practices, academic integrity, standards-based evaluation, and the relationship between curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
In addition to her teaching and examining experience, Ms. Pittas has contributed directly to IB curriculum development. In 2017, she was invited by the International Baccalaureate Organization to participate in the revision of the Group 1 curriculum, contributing specifically to the meaningful integration of Theory of Knowledge (TOK) within language and literature studies. Her work contributed to the revised curriculum launched in 2019 and reflects her longstanding commitment to conceptual learning, interdisciplinary thinking, academic rigor, and innovative curriculum design.
Her professional engagement extends beyond the classroom and school setting to the wider international IB community. In 2020, Ms. Pittas was selected as a presenter for the IB Global Conference in The Hague, where she was scheduled to present on empowering young people through the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Although the conference was ultimately canceled due to the global pandemic, the themes underlying that work continued to inform her research, leadership, and educational practice.
In October 2026, Ms. Pittas will return to the IB Global Conference platform as a co-presenter at the IB Global Conference in Lyon, France—Shared Learning, Shared Futures. Her co-authored presentation, “One System, Two Ways of Knowing: A Dual-Pathway Model for Interdisciplinary Extended Essays through SDG Contexts Applicable Across All IB Subject Groups, Illustrated through Collaboration between Group 1 and Group 5 in Alignment with the 2027 EE Guide,” has been accepted for presentation at the conference.
The presentation proposes an innovative framework for interdisciplinary Extended Essay inquiry, using the Sustainable Development Goals as authentic global contexts through which students can investigate complex issues from distinct disciplinary perspectives. Illustrated through collaboration between Group 1: Studies in Language and Literature and Group 5: Mathematics, the dual-pathway model is designed for application across all IB subject groups while maintaining the disciplinary rigor and methodological expectations of the 2027 Extended Essay Guide. The work reflects Ms. Pittas's broader educational philosophy: that meaningful interdisciplinary learning should create connections across disciplines without diminishing the distinctive ways of knowing, thinking, and communicating that give each discipline its intellectual integrity.
Ms. Pittas remains deeply committed to continuous professional learning through IB workshops, examiner training, professional conferences, curriculum development, and collaborative educational networks. Her work consistently bridges leadership, curriculum, assessment, interdisciplinary learning, sustainability, and global citizenship, with an emphasis on translating educational theory into meaningful practice for students and teachers.
As IB / AP Director at ACS Athens, Ms. Pittas leads with a strong commitment to maintaining the integrity and academic rigor of the Diploma Programme while preparing the school community for the evolving landscape of international education. She views educational leadership not simply as programme administration, but as the responsibility to cultivate a culture in which students are challenged to inquire deeply, teachers are empowered to innovate thoughtfully, and learning remains connected to the realities of an increasingly complex and interconnected world.
