Avner, Hannah, Faculty, 4th Grade

Ms. Hannah Avner is excited to join ACS Athens as a 4th grade teacher, and to inspire and challenge her students through the units they embark on.  

Ms. Avner grew up in Denver, Colorado. She holds a BA from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where she majored in Politics and earned certificates in Fine Art and Entrepreneurship. Following her undergraduate degree, she joined Teach for America, a program that places high-achieving college graduates in underserved schools for a two-year commitment. During her time in the program, Ms. Avner attended trainings led by leading thinkers in education, and earned both her California Teaching Credential and her Masters in Education. Although she originally thought she would work in policy following her corps commitment, she fell in love with the creativity, intellectual challenge, humor, and sweetness she found in teaching elementary students.

After continuing to teach 5th and 6th graders in California for several years, Ms. Avner began her international teaching journey at The International School of Panama. She loved the cultural diversity of her students and the global focus of an international school, which inspired her to continue working abroad and eventually make the move to Greece. Ms. Avner is looking forward to learning about Greek culture, exploring the country, and getting to know the families in the ACS community.

When it comes to pedagogy, Ms. Avner is passionate about creating engaging units that feel relevant and connected to the real world. She strongly believes in embedding choice and differentiation into units to help different kinds of learners thrive. 

In her free time, Ms. Avner enjoys hiking, exploring new places, and reading sci-fi and fantasy novels. She is also in the process of writing and illustrating several children’s books, which she hopes to one day publish.
