Varvara Thoma joined the ACS Athens Physical Education Department in 2026. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education and Sports Science from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 2015, specializing in Basketball, and her Master’s Degree in Strength, Conditioning and Rehabilitation from the University of Portsmouth, United Kingdom, in 2023. She spent the past nine years living and working in the United Kingdom, gaining valuable international professional experience while further developing her expertise in education, sport, and athletic development.
Her professional experience includes working with children, adolescents, and athletes across different settings and levels of ability. She has worked in physical education, basketball coaching, strength and conditioning, fitness training, injury prevention, and rehabilitation. She has also worked with children with special educational needs, supporting them in developing physical, motor, social, and interpersonal skills while building confidence and independence.
In the United Kingdom, she worked with Portsmouth Force Basketball Club, coaching elementary, middle, and high school students, as well as younger athletes. She also worked as a Strength and Conditioning and Rehabilitation Coach at the University of Portsmouth, supporting athletes through individualized training programs and collaborating with coaches and physiotherapists.
She is an International Strength and Conditioning Practitioner – Level 7 (IUSCA) and holds additional qualifications including NPLQ Certified Lifeguard, First Aid & AED, and safeguarding certifications.
As a former high-level basketball player, she competed in Greece’s top division and represented the Greek U19 National Team, earning a silver medal at the 2009 Balkan Championship.
She is passionate about creating an inclusive and holistic environment where students can develop physical competence, confidence, teamwork, and a strong sense of wellbeing. Her aim is not only to encourage students to be physically active, but also to help them understand how movement and physical activity contribute to their overall physical, social, mental, and emotional development. She strives to empower students to develop a positive and lifelong relationship with physical activity and recognise its importance as part of a healthy, balanced, and fulfilling lifestyle.
