Kotsiani, Athanasia, Faculty, Physical Education

Ms. Athanasia Kotsiani earned her bachelor’s degree in Physical Education & Sports Science from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, specializing in swimming (2004), and a Master’s degree in Education and Creative Learning from Democritus University of Thrace (2014). She has been a member of the ACS Athens faculty since 2005, teaching Physical Education across Middle and High School. Beginning this year, she brings her expertise and passion to the Elementary School, teaching Physical Education to grades 3–5. In addition to her teaching background, Ms. Kotsiani is a certified lifeguard, international swimming official, wall climbing operator/supervisor, and CPR/First Aid emergency responder. She coached the ACS Athens swimming teams from 2005 to 2023, coached the cross-country team for five seasons, and has contributed to the after-school swimming program for 19 years.
In 2024–25, Ms. Kotsiani designed and led a year-long Middle School initiative dedicated to disability awareness, empathy, and inclusion. Through Paralympic sports, workshops, hands-on activities, inspiring guest speakers, community partnerships, service learning, and fundraising events, students explored the challenges and strengths of individuals with a variety of disabilities. They developed a deeper understanding of inclusion in sports and everyday life, rethought traditional definitions of ability, cultivated compassion, and became advocates for equity within their school community. Watching students embrace new experiences, connect with peers of all abilities, and take meaningful action reinforced her belief in the power of education to shape socially responsible, thoughtful, and caring individuals.
Born and raised in Athens, Greece, Ms. Kotsiani is committed to inspiring students to embrace active, healthy lifestyles while fostering teamwork, resilience, and compassion as lifelong values. Her dedication to nurturing respect, confidence, and empathy in every child guides her work in the classroom and beyond.
