For the ACS Athens Class of 2023, June 16, 2023 marks a significant milestone. It is an achievement and signifies the successful completion of primary and secondary education and serves as a foundation for future academic pursuits. It is a transition to adulthood and symbolizes the readiness to take on increased responsibilities. As they bid farewell to the past and embark on a new journey, a mix of relief, excitement, and nostalgia fills their hearts.

The ACS Athens Commencement Ceremony of 2023 was a moment of great celebration for the entire community. Family members, friends, teachers, and distinguished guests, including His Excellency Mr. George James Tsunis, the Ambassador of the United States of America to Greece, Mr. Tim Ananiadis, the Chairperson of the ACS Athens Board of Trustees, and this year's commencement speaker, Mr. Alexander Payne, Award Winning Film Director, and Screenwriter, joined in the festivities.

Dr. Peggy Pelonis, ACS Athens President
Throughout the ceremony, the speakers shared valuable insights and pearls of wisdom, highlighting the unique themes that set this graduation apart from others. One central theme emerged—the extraordinary challenges these graduates faced during the pandemic, which unfolded as they entered high school. With determination, resilience, camaraderie, ethos, and compassion, and with unwavering support from their educators, administrators, and parents, they not only overcame these challenges but also triumphed in the face of adversity.

Addressing the graduating class, ACS Athens President Dr. Peggy Pelonis acknowledged the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and personal growth. She emphasized the remarkable community that they have collectively built—a community of conscious citizens who come together in times of celebration and difficulty.

With heartfelt emotion, she assured the graduates:

His Excellency, George James Tsunis, U.S Ambassador to the Hellenic Republic of Greece

"I see you and hear you every single day, from the moment you enter the ACS Athens gates to the moment the campus empties of your voices and activity. Your successes are my successes, and your challenges are my challenges."

President Pelonis expressed gratitude to the ACS Athens Board of Trustees, administrators, faculty, and staff, who consistently prioritize student well-being and provide guidance and mentorship. She reminded the graduates that they are part of a community that fosters a sense of belonging and inclusivity.

"Equipped with knowledge, skills, and values, you have the power to make a profound impact on the world, and we are immensely proud to send you forth as conscious global citizens."

Mr. Tim Ananiadis, Chairperson of the ACS Athens Board of Trustees
Ambassador Tsunis also addressed the graduates, recognizing them as the "next generation of innovators, creators, and leaders of tomorrow." He highlighted their fortune in living in a democracy, reminding them that democracy’s values originated in Athens. Speaking from experience, the Ambassador offered valuable advice. He encouraged the students to be empathetic leaders who understand the importance of collaboration, integrity, ethics, and responsible citizenship. He emphasized the enduring nature of bridges compared to walls.

Mr. Tim Ananiadis reflected on the numerous challenges the graduates faced during their high school years. He commended their strength in rising above adversity, embracing change, and forging their own paths despite uncertainty, concluding with heartfelt congratulations.

For two-time Oscar-winning film director Alexander Payne - this is a golden time.

“You have endless possibilities in front of you. I’m here to tell you that you can actually get what you want if you’re willing enough and driven enough”.

Mr. Alexander Payne, Film Director
Mr. Payne emphasized the precious, creative, beautiful, fragile, and strong nature of this phase in their lives. He passionately implored the graduates to view their lives as a service to the world, encouraging them to go beyond consumption and strive for improvement.

Finally, Dr. David Nelson, Academy Principal, told the graduates that the students' actions speak louder than their words through their service and achievements.

“You are indeed back from the Pandemic, and your actions ripple through the community and continue to impact ACS Athens for years to come."

Dr. Dave Nelson, Academy Principal
His advice to the graduates; create time for introspection, be creative, and be the rock that creates the ripples to make the world better for others and cultivate cultures of connections.

Congratulations to the ACS Athens Class of 2023!
