When the 2020-2021 academic year began, I was keen to start a club that would raise awareness of plastic pollution destroying our planet. The “Save the Wave” club already existed, and I was more than happy to accept the challenge of running a thriving and active group of students pursuing a healthy planet! Soaring plastic pollution combined with high levels of environmental consciousness among ACS Athens students resulted in a robust club of more than 30 students. The participation and interest of those students are outstanding!

To make the most out of our club, we organized it into three major teams, with team leaders and a coordinator:

- The Research team is responsible for keeping us updated with major developments in combating plastic pollution and other relevant topics on sustainable ways of living.

- The Outreach team is responsible for sharing awareness of plastic pollution globally, plastic pollution in our oceans, and the increasing problem of microplastics.

- The Financial team is not only responsible for raising funds for our club’s actions (organizing a beach clean when it will be permitted), but also they are promoting a sustainable way of living by selling bamboo toothbrushes, reusable straws, and bottles, even bamboo cotton buds, to help us change our daily habits for the sake of our planet.

As reported, plastic in the oceans will outweigh fish by 2050, with at least 937 million tons of plastic and 895 million tons of fish. The “Save the Wave” club continues to work against all odds. We continue to work on shared documents during lockdowns and school closure, creating posters with pictures and facts to raise awareness of plastic pollution.

The club's spirits are high, and we believe that this is only the beginning of broader and more concrete actions towards sustainability within ACS Athens and in our wider community!
