Geometry with Algebraic Topics Honors

Prerequisites

To enroll in the ACS Athens Virtual Geometry with Algebraic Topics Honors course students must meet the criteria below: 

  • Student performance in the first quarter of the current face-to-face Geometry with Algebraic Topics course will be evaluated with an emphasis on Quarter 1 assessments. Students are expected to perform B and above to be considered for any of the math online courses.
  • Teacher’s recommendation.
  • Counselor’s input to ensure alignment with the student’s academic path.

Course description

This course is a study of topics in Geometry with Algebra. Topics in Geometry include: angles, parallel lines, triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, circles, areas and volume. Algebraic topics include: algebraic expressions, factoring, rational expressions, linear & quadratic equations, systems of non-linear equations, graphing in the coordinate plane, right angle and non-right angle trigonometry. Algebraic skills will be incorporated in all topics of Geometry. Topics similar to Geometry with Algebraic Topics are extended. Hence, the course involves more challenging problem-solving. 

*Upon successful completion of this virtual course, students will be required to take a face-to-face placement test, which will be scheduled a week after the final exams, to determine accurate placement in their next on-campus Mathematics course at ACS Athens:

  • To progress from Geometry with Algebraic Topics Honors to Algebra 2 & Trigonometry Regular, students must earn a passing grade and above on both their Geometry with Algebraic Topics Honors virtual course and the face-to-face placement test.
  • To progress from Geometry with Algebraic Topics Honors to Algebra 2 & Trigonometry Honors, students must earn a B- and above on both their Geometry with Algebraic Topics Honors virtual course and the face-to-face placement test.
  • To progress from Geometry with Algebraic Topics Honors to IB Applications & Interpretations SL, students must earn a C or above on both their Geometry with Algebraic Topics Honors virtual course and the face-to-face placement test.

Dr. Toumpakari was born and raised in Athens and attended the University of Athens where she studied Mathematics. She obtained a M.Sc. in Applied Statistics from the University of Oxford and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Chicago on a full scholarship from the University, while being an honorary scholar of the Onassis Foundation.

Dr. Toumpakari has made presentations in several mathematics conferences in the US. In Greece, she presented at the 1st Congress of Greek Mathematicians on a statistical project she participated in at the Childhood Cancer Research Group at Oxford. Her teaching experience includes a variety of undergraduate classes at the University of Chicago, mentoring gifted teenagers at a math-themed summer camp and teaching under-privileged students in the Chicago Public Schools, as well as teaching A-levels in the UK.

Dr. Toumpakari has been a teacher of mathematics at ACS Athens since 2012. Classes taught at ACS include Geometry with Algebraic Topics Standard/Honors, Algebra 2 Trig Standard/Honors, Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus, IB Higher Level, IB Applications and Interpretation HL/SL, Algebra 1 in the Middle School and in the Academy, Pre-Algebra, Math 7 and Math 6.

Dr Toumpakari has been a coach in the Math Circles Program for Grades 7-8 and a Mathcounts coach as well. She is also a Senior Fellow at the ACS Athens Virtual Institute, where she has taught Geometry with Algebraic Topics HN and an IB Prep course. This year, Dr. Toumpakari is teaching IB Math AI SL Year 2 and Geometry with Algebraic Topics Honors in the Academy, and Math 6 in the Middle School.
