ACS JV Volleyball Team in Action

Team spirit overcame obstacles!
By Zacharias Sitinas

The JV boys’ volleyball team had new members. The team in total was eleven players. Although the games didn’t go very well, the team’s spirit was good. The only games we won were the second game with Pierce and one with Byron. We won two out of five games.
At the tournament, we won most of the games. With Campion (the toughest team) we did our best! Instead of a ten points difference they beat us with only a one point difference!
Unfortunately, we missed a chance to play against Byron. It was not nice when we were supposed to play our last game with Byron and we didn’t play. That may be due to the fact that they lost most of their games and were afraid to lose again. At least we came in second place!
With the team, we improved on teamwork. We won each other’s respect. Also, we got better at skills (like diving and digging for the ball), and we worked on cheering for the team while playing. The drill where the coach threw the ball high and three players had to run to do three passes was the best. It helped our skills and teamwork!
I can’t wait until the next season!

“Interview with J.V. Girls Volleyball Coach Weimholt"

By Zacharias Sitinas

Zacharias: How many new players did you have on the team?

Coach Weimholt: Out of a full 16 girls, we had 80% returning from last year’s team and 20% were brand new.

Zacharias: How did the games go?

Coach Weimholt: We showed a lot of talent in the games.  The two most exciting matches were against Pierce, where we had them beat by a landslide and they called the game early, and the championship game. At the championship game, it took us three full sets of fighting to the teeth “sto tsak” to finally win a solid third place. The girls were elated as we took our medals.

Zacharias: In what things did you improve?

Coach Weimholt: Our goals were to prove that we are a “real” J.V. team by having every girl master her overhand serve. By the end of the season, it was a great feeling to see lightbulbs go off as the girls, who never thought they could, slammed balls over the net. Over all great improvements…next year we have to work on hits.

ISST Cross Country Tournament in Bonn

By Alexandros Markowitz

The ACS cross country team participated in the ISST tournament in Bonn, Germany. Both boys and girls ACS varsity teams came in 5th out of 9 teams. The JV boys team also came 5th. Unfortunately, ACS didn’t have a JV girls team. The junior varsity boys team consisted of 9th graders Constantine Tzouros and Kyriakos Petrakos, and 7th graders Kilian Copp, Angelos Makras, and myself, Alexandros Markowitz. I interviewed a couple of my teammates. First, I interviewed Kilian, who is a native of Bonn, our guide and translator for most of our stay. I was also housed with him in some of his family friends’ house.
“It was funny being on the plane with my classmates. I really enjoyed that,” Kilian said, when asked what it was like on the plane with friends/classmates. “It was cool and weird to be in my hometown[Bonn] with my Greek friends, and I did much better than I expected in the race. I hope to improve by running hard every single day!”
Next, I interviewed Angelos Makras: “It was terrific to be with my friends and meet new people. It was one of the most memorable experiences ever. I believe Bonn was different than Athens. I think it is better. I did very well and I’m super proud of my time.” I absolutely agree with him.
We are a young team that did well. I loved Bonn and I loved the pastries and meats. I especially liked the fact that all my friends in Greece were sitting in class doing work. It was a great experience and a fantastic, beautiful course. I definitely encourage everybody that thinks he/she is good at long distance running to try out for cross country next year. It’s lots of fun and it’s also good for you!
