IIC Summer Scholar's Academy, Summer 2013 - Accepting Applications

The IIC currently accepts applications for its Summer Scholar's Academy Program, for the Summer of 2013, for Middle and High School students.

The program offers a variety of courses, in partnership with local educational/cultural institutions.   All courses will take place in the ACS Athens campus and are also open to non ACS Athens students.

SAT Prep Academy

Course Profile

 

Duration: Program starts on June 19, 2013 and ending on July 3, 2013 (No class on June 24 - Whit Monday holiday)
Distribution: Ten intensive daily sessions 10:00 - 13:00
Class size: Maximum 7 - 8 students / class; 6 students minimum for course to run (up to 16)

Description

Focuses on test taking strategies; test taking practice and content review and reinforcement.

 

Healthy Choices / Healthy Living

The nature and structure of Writing; workshops will include visits to museums, peer critiquing, drafting, brainstorming, etc.

Description

An adventure in mathematical creativity, problem-solving, game playing, puzzle-solving and logical thinking for students entering grades 7-8.

During this program, students will also visit ancient monuments and approach works of art and explore nature with a mathematical mind and frame of mind.

The program offers College and professional courses, in partnership with local educational/cultural institutions; college-level enrichment courses; college prep programs, etc.

Duration: Programs start on February 11, 2013 (Principles of Management) & February 15, 2013 (Entrepreneurship)
Distribution: Each course is 30 hours; sessions take place online/flexible for the former and every Friday 16:30-19:30 for the latter
Location: HAU building on Massalias Street in the center of Athens, a 5 minute walk from the Panepestimiou Metro station, or a 10 minute walk from the Syntagma station
Credit: 1 ACS credit upon successful completion of a course

  • Principles of Management : management theories and principles; learn how to plan, organize, motivate others; develop decision-making and communication skills.

2013 Summer Leadership Discovery Institute (in collaboration with Saint Louis University)

Description

A unique and challenging interdisciplinary university-level course for talented high school students offered by the IIC in collaboration with St. Louis University.

Learn the principles of flight.  Learn to tell a good story and turn it into a movie.   Practice leadership through service.  Learn from leaders who have made change happen.   Experience college life on the campus of a major U.S. university in a historic American city.

Create and Develop Your Portfolio: An Intensive Studio Course in Drawing

Duration: February 23, 2013 - May 25, 2013
Predefined Saturdays only - check detailed schedule
Distribution: 48 hours total, plus 2 hours bonus.  Sessions of 4 hours 11:00 – 15:00
Location: AKTO main campus, in central Athens at Pedion Areos, 11A Evelpidon St. (7 minute walk from Victoria metro)
Class size: Minimum 6 students (required for course to run); Maximum number of students who can be enrolled: 20
Credit: 1 ACS credit
Cost:  € 490 (plus materials)

 

Course structure

This course is available to Adults
  • Life Drawing  Sessions 1 - 3 (four hours each)
  • Composition Drawing  Sessions 4 - 6 (four hours each)
  • Linear Drawing  Sessions 7 - 9 (four hours each)
  • Architectural Drawing  Sessions 10 - 12 (four hours each)
  • Bonus: Development Seminar  One lecture-workshop (two hours)

Successful completion of this course will earn students 1 credit.

 

Music Theory and Performance

Course Profile

 

Duration: All classes will start on February 11, 2013, (except for Musical Theater : February 15).
Distribution: 15 - 30 hours total*.  Instruments & Voice are 15 sessions of 50 minutes, each.

Experiencing U.S. College Life: Making the Best Match

Program Profile

 

Duration: April 25, 2013 - May 4, 2013
Location: The Boston / New Haven / Providence areas in the U.S.
Group size: Minimum 10 students; up to 15 students maximum.
Cost:  € 1800

A specially-designed program, which bridges the high school and college/university experiences of our students.  The program will combine travel to the U.S., visits to colleges where ACS Athens juniors / sophomores can take classes, experience college (and real city) life, meet with admissions officers, etc.

The final itinerary for the university visits will be tailored to match the participants' special interests.

ACS Athens - St. Louis University Leadership Program, Summer 2013

Saint Louis University and ACS Athens have signed a groundbreaking collaboration agreement to promote special projects, cultural exchanges and educational / professional advancements of both faculty and students of the institutions; the signing ceremony took place on Friday, November 9, 2012.  (More here...)
