Classicism & Romanticism In French Art & Thought; An Online Course and Field Study Experience

Imagine exploring ancient Athens and modern Paris with other international students!

If you are a mature, self-motivated student with an interest in art, architecture, design or European History, and if you like to travel, read on:

This course, combining an online learning experience with a rich field study experience in Athens and Paris, has been created by the instructors, Ms. Kathleen Jasonides and Ms. Amalia Zavacopoulou, as an opportunity for an international group of students to research and study firsthand the influence of Classical Greek civilization on European art and thought in the 18th to 20th centuries.

Itinerary, Costs, Important Dates

Cost for ACS Athens students: €1400

Includes:

  • R/T airfare Athens-Paris

  • Excursions to Versailles and Chartres

  • Some museum entrance fees
  • Course credit (1⁄2 ACS Arts or elective credit on the transcript)

Field study portion:
March 17 - 24, 2018

Tour the ancient center of Athens, the Acropolis, the New Acropolis Museum. Fly to Paris to study the great works of art in the Louvre, Orsay, Rodin, Pompidou, and Cluny Museums. Explore the Latin Quarter and Montmartre. Visit Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower, and important historical sites. Enjoy a concert in beautiful, historic Sainte Chapelle. Experience Versailles and Chartres. Sample French food and Parisian life. Document your experience in a field study notebook.

Online portion
Nov. 14, 2017 - April 30, 2018

Complete selected digital readings. View online videos. Participate in online discussion groups. Explore selected websites related to the field study portion of the course. Learn to organize a field study notebook and develop a working vocabulary of terms relevant to the field study.

Culminating activities to earn credit
by April 30, 2018

Contribute to a collaborative project, submit a complete field study notebook documenting and reflecting upon the field study experience and complete a digital survey giving feedback on the course.

Summer Scholar's Academy 2017

Enrich Your Learning!  Expand Your Horizons!

The Institute for Innovation and Creativity (IIC) currently accepts applications for its Summer Scholars' Academy Program of 2017 - for High School students (entering grades 10-12 in the upcoming academic year).

The program offers a variety of courses, in partnership with local educational/cultural institutions, as needed.   Courses will take place in the ACS Athens campus; outdoors in Athens; and at Megara & Athens International airports.

Please note that all of the courses provide students with the opportunity to earn high school credit in fulfillment of graduation requirements.

Description

Introduction to the theory and priciples of design; a general view of the field of applied arts (from aesthetic, technical and expressive viewpoints); combinations and compositions using a variety of materials and applications for the development of students’ aesthetic sense and creativity. Students will have created a new body of work showing a diverse selection of subject and use of medium, while enriching their art portfolio.

A specially designed, intensive college art course for students who want to explore their passion for drawing, extend their range of their skills and/or prepare a professional portfolio for art school/university admission...

Students will develop their skills on and practice different kinds of drawing and painting such as : Still Life, Compositional & Linear, Architectural; also Portfolio preparation, etc.

Description

Get the skills to make a short video documentary and a short audio/radio piece with this intensive practical course that makes use of the resources available in the Sabbagh Media Lab in the ACS Athens Learning Commons.   Designed for beginners, this course offers the technical and creative foundation for such productions.

Skills to be explored: Concept development; Storytelling; Writing for radio / TV; Conducting interviews; Use of camera, sound and video recording and editing equipment and software; Collaborative shooting, recording and editing video/audio.

Software used: We will use programs such as Final Cut Pro X, Adobe Premiere, Motion, After Effects and Photoshop.

Leadership Courses in the U.S., Summer 2017

Widener University, USA scenes

The Institute for Innovation and Creativity (IIC) at ACS Athens is happy to offer Leadership Summer Courses for Academy students (in grades 9 - 11.)

Following our important partnership agreement with Widener University, ACS Athens and Widener are offering two summer courses in the U.S., taking place in the latter's campus in Philadelphia and in Washington D.C.

Both courses emphasize Leadership, Collaborative activities, College life, learning about U.S. culture, but may also include Engineering projects, visits to other Universities, etc...

Important Deadline: Due to the planning involved please register by March 15, 2017.

Both courses begin on June 24 and run through July 7, 2017.

Life-Span Development

What

Holistic development from birth to old age.  Provide theoretical knowledge and assist the application of this knowledge in everyday practice with developing children, adolescents and adults.

Dr. Alessandra Sax: Dr. Sax is, among others, a Psychology Lecturer of Child Psychology, Life-Span Development, Cultural Psychology, Advanced Psychology, etc.  She is also a licensed psychotherapist; faculty ACS Athens.

Pilates

What

A refreshing mind-body work out to develop a strong core and flexibility...   Pilates can be tweaked to fit any body type and needs no prior experience.

Upper Elementary School students (in grades 3 - 5), have a great opportunity to learn and enjoy Jazz and Hip Hop Dance that will lead to a performance at the Theater at ACS Athens in May.  The class goal is to produce physical and expressively well-trained dancers.   Most importantly, students are encouraged to relax, breathe and enjoy this exploration and to give it their best.
