CRITICAL FRIENDS GROUPS, June 17-21, 2012

Discover the power of Critical Friends Groups for your school, department, or group and become a certified trained coach / facilitator in this five-day institute -- and enjoy the beauties of Athens!

A Critical Friends Group is a form of a professional learning community made up of educators who share a commitment to professional growth, collaboration, and improvement of student learning.  "In 1994, the Annenberg Institute for School Reform designed a different approach to professional development, one that would be focused on the practitioner and on defining what would improve student learning."

Since 2000, Critical Friends Groups Trainings have been coordinated by the National School Reform Faculty (NSRF) at the Harmony Education Center in Bloomington, Indiana. The Director of NSRF, Michelle Mattoon, will be conducting the training on our campus.

Partnership for Student Success Initiative

The ACS Athens IIC Learning Enhancement Program is proud to present a new initiative established to address parents’ and educators’ collective interest in the well-‐being and development of our students. Parents and professionals are cordially invited to join “Partnership for Student Success,” a series of workshops, presentations and forums that will provide them the opportunity to share and learn strategies to empower student learners. Sessions will be scheduled monthly and will include a presentation on a topic related to promoting students’ academic, emotional and social well being followed by a discussion of the topic.

The first session, scheduled for November 16th, 2011, will address the issue of students’ study and work habits. Participants will first watch a video presentation and then have a chance to discuss concerns, raise questions and share successful strategies for improving organization and study habits and maximizing learning potential.

The second session will take place on December 8th, 2011 and will touch upon the topic of adolescence and helping our teenagers cope with academic challenges. Attendees will view a presentation about the developmental and academic challenges that may arise during the high school years and will then discuss their concerns and/or questions.

Follow up sessions will be determined according to parent interests. The attached brochure gives you detailed information about the upcoming sessions. Thanks to the ACS Athens PTO for their support of this program.
