Course description

The Humanities Instructors have planned this online, interdisciplinary course as an opportunity for students to explore the influence of Classical Greece and Byzantine Greece on the Italian Renaissance. Through their study of online resources students will learn how Classical Greek Humanism and contact with Byzantine philosophers shaped the philosophical and political thought of Renaissance Italy. The art historical component of the course will focus on examples of how Classical Greece and Byzantium inspired Renaissance art and architecture.

Field Study: As a culminating activity, the course offers an optional field study tour in Italy which includes visits to Arezzo, Florence, Siena, and Rome.

The program is open to students in grades 9-12. Students will be graded on the various course activities.  Students will earn a total of one high school credit. They may choose either one full social studies credit, or they may divide the course credit into ½ social studies credit and ½ art credit.
