Humanities: The Influence of Classical Greek Humanism on Western Civilization, 18th - 20th Centuries /

Course description

The Humanities Instructors have planned this online course as an opportunity for students to research and study firsthand the influence of Classical Greek Humanism on European art and thought in the 18th -20th centuries. This is explored with particular emphasis on Ancient Greece, The Enlightenment, the Neoclassical and Romantic periods, and the early 20th Century. Among the course readings are philosophical and historical works of ancient Greece, the Enlightenment, the Romantic period and the early 20th century.  The art historical component includes representative works from Ancient Greek, Neoclassical, Romantic and 20th century artistic movements.

Field Study: As a culminating activity, the course offers an optional field study tour in France which includes visits to Paris, Chartres, Versailles, Giverny and Auvers-sur-Oise. 

The program is open to students in grades 9-12. Students will be graded on the various course activities.  Students will earn a total of one high school credit. They may choose either one full social studies credit, or they may divide the course credit into ½ social studies credit and ½ art credit. For ACS students the grades will be included in their Grade Point Average.

Minimum Enrollment: 5 Students in a Course

If enrollment in a course fails to reach the minimum number of participants required for the class to run, the class will be canceled and tuition will be reimbursed.
