Learning Enhancement After School Programs

Welcome to the 2021-2022 Academic School Year. Now that the dust has settled and students have found their pace for the year, we would like to make you aware of the great wealth of resources and support that the Learning Commons has to offer our students free of charge. The Learning Commons provides our students and faculty with state-of-the-art facilities, such as a media studio, a math and science studio, a writing/research studio, an incubator of students’ creative ideas, a library, and more. These spaces are staffed with professionals who have expertise in the fields of Mathematics, Sciences, Writing, Research, Literacy, STEAM education, and Media. It is a privilege for our students to have the ability to visit the studios anytime Monday through Friday between 9am and 5pm (with the exception of Wednesday 9am - 3:45pm) to receive supplemental assistance that will enhance, inspire, and guide our students in all the various fields of mathematics, science, writing and research, beyond the classroom. The Learning Commons is an area where students and faculty function as architects of their own learning as they pursue their intellectual curiosities. The Learning Commons is the heartbeat of education at ACS Athens.

Additionally, the Learning Commons also offers additional support through the Learning Enhancement Program (LEP), a paid program, available if there are instances where a student requires more regular small group focused instruction. The LEP strives to provide the individual assistance necessary for each student to achieve academic success in their area of focus. We enthusiastically provide the qualified personnel necessary for your child to succeed and an atmosphere conducive to learning for our students. This year, we have emphasized our efforts towards developing the LEP: After School Homework Support Program, where small groups of at least four students work towards a common goal; whether that be homework completion, mathematics, science or increasing literacy skills and more. Students may choose to enroll in the program for a semester or a year, with the opportunity to receive the necessary aid to maximize their skills for success and exit the program as successful independent learners. The Coordinator of the Program, Ms. Marina Papaioannou, currently works in the Learning Commons, and holds a Bachelor’s Degree from New York University, in Political Science and Classical Civilizations & Hellenic Studies, as well as a Law Degree from Pace University in New York. This is her second year coordinating the program and we are very happy to report that last year's program proved to be quite successful.

If you have any additional questions, please contact Ms. Marina Papaioannou, email: papaioannoum@acs.gr. We look forward to working with you and your child.

Aim

  • Students will identify their learning style and pertinent strategies to effectively organize their work.
  • Students will return home with as much of their homework or missing assignments complete, leaving them time for leisure activities and family pursuits.
  • Students will enhance their study skills and organizational techniques to progress as independent learners.
  • Students will be encouraged to discover their own answers to their questions by embracing the trial and error process and improving their problem-solving skills

Program structure and instructors

Program Structure

  • Students will be provided with a structured, quiet environment with designated hours for studying.
  • Students will be responsible for keeping up with their assignments by checking both Skyward and Moodle before starting their work.
  • Students will be introduced to the daily use of a calendar/planner to organize their assignments and upcoming work. They will also be encouraged to set daily goals for the completion of their homework.
  • Students will be away from all distracting stimuli (electronics) while completing their homework.
  • Students will ensure that all writings go through a process; brainstorming, outline, paragraph structure, and drafts before submitting their final piece.
  • Students will be allowed structured physical breaks (time defined or task defined) to clear their minds and focus back on their work.
  • Students will be provided with immediate and direct feedback about the timely completion of their work.
  • Students will be encouraged to develop frequent communication with their classroom teachers via email and Moodle.

Program Instructors

The Program Instructors will provide homework support in the following ways:

  • Assist students in understanding instructions if needed. If students do not understand the directions correctly, instructors will repeat them by breaking them down into step-by-step procedures.
  • Improve students’ time management by giving them one task to complete at a time and introducing the next task, only when students have successfully completed the previous task.
  • Improve students’ organizational skills, by assisting students with keeping their binders and notebooks organized and well-presented.
  • Emphasize the importance of taking notes and highlighting or underlining while reading to increase reading comprehension.
  • Encourage students to look at all available resources on Moodle so as to assist in the completion of work.
  • Read aloud to students who are auditory learners or provide them with audiobooks -if and when possible.

The Program Instructors will work in small groups with a minimum of 3 students and a maximum of 4 students. The Program Instructors will also provide updates to parents via elog notes that will be shared at the end of each session via email if requested.

Please note that the Learning Commons Staff reserves the right not to offer a session if the Program does not reach the minimum required number of students. Additionally, should at any time during the school year the school is required to close by the Greek authorities, the sessions will continue on the same days and the same times however all sessions will be virtual through zoom meet.
