International Mathematics Competition Kangaroo

The annual international Mathematics competition “Kangaroo” is the largest educational and most fun competition in the world with over 6.5 million students participating from 70 different countries! Greece joined the competition in 2007. Any ACS Athens student from 2nd grade up to 12th grade can participate*.

There are 6 levels for the competition based on each participant’s grade level including multiple - choice questions as below:

Level Students in grade(s) Number of questions
B 2nd 21
1 3rd and 4th 24
2 5th and 6th 30
3 7th and 8th 30
4 9th and 10th 30
5 11th and 12th 30

* First Grade students can also participate in level B depending on confidence of their reading level.

Objectives

The competition aims to promote mathematics as a subject approachable to anyone. It promotes creativity, logical thinking and challenges students to approach questions from a different perspective. Students will develop their problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

A celebration of Math learning

Every participating student will get a small token of appreciation for their participation regardless of their performance, and a certificate of participation. One out of six participants will also receive a symbolic award based on their performance. For more information regarding the Greek Chapter of the competition please click here.

AMC 8

What is the AMC 8?

It is the first competition at middle school level of the official American Mathematical Competition series by the Mathematics Association of America. The competition lasts for 40-minutes and it has 25 multiple choice questions. The material covers the following topics from a typical middle school mathematics curriculum:

  • Counting and probability;
  • Estimation;
  • Proportional reasoning;
  • Elementary geometry including the Pythagorean theorem;
  • Spatial visualization;
  • Applications in everyday situations;
  • Reading and interpreting graphs and tables.

The competition questions increase in difficulty hence some of the later questions may include topics such as:

  • linear or quadratic functions and equations;
  • coordinate geometry;
  • topics included in a beginning algebra course.

Why participate in the AMC 8?

AMC 8  provides an opportunity for middle school students to:

  • Develop positive attitudes towards mathematics;
  • Practice and enhance analytical series that can assist in future careers;
  • Apply classroom skills in unique problem-solving challenges;
  • Have fun while doing mathematics in a low stress and friendly environment.

Registration information and Competition Dates

The AMC 8 will be administered on Tuesday January 28th 2025 during school hours on site at the ACS Athens campus.

Registration for the AMC 8 competition opens on Wednesday September 11th 2024 and the registration deadline is set on Tuesday January 21st 2025.
