Congratulations are in order for the ACS Athens Debate Club team that qualified for the finals of the International Competition for Young Debaters via Zoom on Saturday, February 26. This is the second time that ACS Athens has qualified for the finals of this competition.

Students engaged in three (3) online debates in the British Parliamentary format and discussed issues such as making voting mandatory, paying stay-at-home parents a living wage, and prioritizing the adaptation to the consequences of climate change over the attempt to slow down or reverse it. Students brainstormed points, crafted arguments, and delivered their 5-minute speeches with just 15 minutes of preparation time!

ACS Athens had three teams participating in the event and the team of Kathleen Morris and Sydney Pina qualified for the finals with their debate on the topic of including and celebrating the contributions of men to feminism.

The top 4 teams of the tournament that competed in the semi-finals will participate in the Grand Finals, hosted this year at the Oxford University Union, on 24 April 2022.

Let’s all wish our team the best of luck and congratulate all our 9th grade ACS debaters, for their passion in participating and dedication to supporting each other. They are:

  • Eva Giannaki
  • Iliana Lyssaios
  • Kathleen Morris
  • Ioanna Pantazis
  • Sydney Pina
  • Alexander Theodorakis

The future is looking bright and promising for the ACS Debate club
