A group of enthusiastic and concerned 6th graders embodied conscious citizenship and designed an initiative to deliver funds to the American Red Cross for refugee relief. The students, motivated by a sense that they had to respond to a large-scale and proximate humanitarian crisis, sought a teacher advisor and administrative permission, designed a fundraiser and divided the logistics, and held a successful donut sale that cleared over 300 euros with all proceeds going to the American Red Cross in the name of ACS Athens. This was a welcome and wonderful example of how students’ shared sense of responsibility positively impacts our world.
