Immersion into the magical world of theater

On December 9, 2022, IB Theater classes 1 & 2 met at the National Theater to watch the performance "City Lights", a theatrical retelling of Charlie Chaplin's famous 1931 movie, adapted for the stage by N. Milivojevic, directed by A. Bennett and original music score composed by T. Oikonomou.

Twenty ACS Athens students and faculty were immersed in a magical world made of silent movies, American vaudeville, physical performance, and musical theater. This unique cross-genre mix gave immense insights to theater students about how performance traditions merge, evolve, and transform.

The stellar production and performance team took the time to meet with ACS Athens students and faculty for a heartwarming post-show talk. Students had a unique opportunity to meet the cast, ask their questions and unpack the experience.

Ms.Sophia Thanopoulou expressed how happy she was to be able to sit next to one another to watch live theater again.

Mr. Nelson commented, “Students not only had the opportunity to see an amazing live interpretation of Chaplin by the talented cast of the Greek National Theater, but also to interact with the director, actors, and musicians following the show. Our students asked about motivations, character development, the creative process, and artistic choices, to name a few. Thank you to Mrs. Thanopoulou for creating such experiences and for helping students to explore theater far outside the walls of their own school. Charlie Chaplin once wrote that “imagination means nothing without doing,” and it is teachers like you who help our students to bring their own ideas and motivations to life.”
