Leading the educational community in Artificial Intelligence application and research is an important aspect of our cutting-edge philosophy and professional development at ACS Athens. This January, our esteemed Learning Commons Librarian, Dr. Marco V. Crivellaro, represented ACS Athens and contributed to discussions on the challenges and possibilities of AI-driven information literacy at an international symposium in Istanbul, Turkey.

Topics including the core characteristics of fake news, the distinct kinds of online mis/dis/mal information, and the latest AI-driven approaches to identifying and mitigating this information were highlighted in his one-hour paper presentation. The paper, “Artificial Intelligence in Library and Information Sciences: Exploring the Intersection,” additionally outlines practical applications of machine learning models for fake news detection, ethical considerations in AI deployment, and strategies for integrating these technologies into library services.

“Through my lecture and discussions at BOBCATSSS 2025, I aimed to emphasize the critical role of libraries in facing misinformation and equipping users with the skills needed to navigate the digital information landscape responsibly and critically,” stated Dr. Crivellaro, ACS Athens Librarian, Database and Research Studio Coordinator.

The event took place in Istanbul from January 21-23, 2025, bringing together researchers, educators, and professionals to exchange insights on the evolving role of AI in library and information science.

Dr. Crivellaro’s support of students and faculty through the ACS Athens Learning Commons is a crucial part of their research and AI application within the Innovation Lab, the Incubator, entrepreneurship, classroom research, and faculty/staff action research projects.
