In honor of International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3, our Elementary School hosted a memorable interactive session for students in Grades 3-5 — an event initiated and coordinated by our Physical Education teacher, Ms. Athanasia Kotsiani.
The focus of the day was to raise awareness, promote empathy, and help young students better understand the experiences of people living with disabilities.
Students and teachers took part in engaging sessions led by trainers from Liberty Guide Dogs. Through these interactive activities, learners gained meaningful insight into the daily realities of individuals with visual impairments.
What the Day Looked Like
Each grade group rotated through a carefully planned set of hands-on learning stations, designed to help students engage, reflect, and learn:
- Introduction: Trainers from Liberty Guide Dogs spoke about their organization, their mission, and the meaningful work they do to support people with visual impairments.
- Video/Presentation Station: Students learned about visual impairments and how guide dogs help people gain independence and navigate the world.
- Blindfolded White Cane Exercise: Guided by adults, students tried navigating with a white cane to build empathy and awareness about the daily realities some people face.
- Guided Walk with Trained Dogs: Blindfolded and guided by trained dogs, students experienced first-hand the difference between using a cane and having a guide dog’s assistance.
- Learning Station: Students explored how gadgets, and games such as chess and tic-tac-toe are adapted for individuals with visual problems.
- Art Studio: Students expressed their thoughts and reflections by creating artwork inspired by their experience; their pieces will be displayed around the school to commemorate the day.
A Community Effort — Students and Teachers Together
The sessions were not just for students; our teachers were also involved, joining the activities, supporting the learning process, and sharing in the powerful moments of empathy and discovery.
Thanks to everyone’s participation — students, teachers, and trainers — the event became a meaningful celebration of kindness, empathy and inclusion.
