ACTIVITY BASED LEARNING

On Wednesday  Dec 14, 2011,  Ms. Tamyra Walker and Ms. Maria Lambrinos  presented a model for activity based learning to the middle school faculty.

The presentation was based on how

• To understand how exploratory based learning helps develop thinking skills and enhances the learning process
• To explore simple techniques that can help you easily facilitate exploratory based learning in your classroom

Well done to both of our colleagues for a most interesting and informative presentation.

2011 American Mathematics Competition Winners (AMC)

The Math Department is proud to announce this year's winners of the AMC competitions.
The American Mathematics Competition (2011 AMC 10/12) results have arrived.

Congratulations to our AMC-10 student Winners:

Nick Papakonstantinou (3rd place)

Congratulations also go out to AMC-12 student winners:

Caio Davison and Jason Hu  (1st place-tied)

We had a great day yesterday full of Math in the conference room. With 5 schools attending (Campion, Costeas-Geitonas, Moraitis, St. Catherine's and ACS) and a record 39 students participating. Teachers presented short discussions of interesting topics (Mr. Nalmpantis on "Not all infinities are the same", Mr. Bowen on "The Conway checkers problem", Mr Williamson on "Bilinear functions" and Mr. Tsokos on "An application of the Brouwer fixed point theorem to a problem in Physics".

 

In the individual competion Mr. Grigoris Gakis of Costeas-Geitonas came first with 21 point out of a possible 26. Second place went to Ms. Natalia Spitha of Moraitis and third place to Angelos Aggelidis of ACS with 19 points who tied with Mr. Konstantinou of Costeas-Geitonas. In the group competition (mixed teams of three) three teams tied for second place (14 point out of 20) and in two we had an ACS student (George Passas, Ioannis Doukas). First place went to a team with an ACS student, Ji Woo Kim, with 17 points.

Creating Applets Presentation, by Maria Falidas

Maria Falidas, presented a workshop on Wednesday, October 5, 2011, on "Creating Applets To Teach mathematical Concepts without the Use of Flash".

GeoGebra is an open source software that allows teachers and students to create interactive applets in their Mathematics classroom.
