ACS Areté Award for Civic Responsibility

As a community that comes together to address the needs of others, ACS strives to promote civic responsibility and to model it for its students. As part of ACS’ civic responsibility accreditation goal, the Social Studies department launched the ACS Areté Award for Civic Responsibility during the 2008-2009 school year. The award was developed in order to define civic responsibility and publicly recognize activities and deeds of others in the school’s community. In turn, it is hoped that this recognition will inspire others to rise up and become more involved in their community.

The ACS Areté Award for Civic Responsibility pays tribute to members of the ACS community for:

  • embodying the spirit of areté and civic responsibility
  • demonstrating extraordinary initiative to serve others
  • striving socially and ethically as healthy, responsible members of the community
  • modeling service at ACS and/or in the local community
  • inspiring others to become involved.

There are a total of five arête awards given per year:

  1. Three awards are for student initiated acts, one per school
  2. One award is for faculty or staff member deeds
  3. One award is for an ACS parents and/or alumni

Nomination Procedure: To receive an ACS Areté Award for Civic Responsibility, the act or deed must be nominated by a student, teacher, or parent and a special committee reviews these nominations and decides on the finalists.

Check back soon to download a form for a 2010-2011 nominee.

See page 52 in Ethos 8 for 2009-2010 winners.

ACS Students Lead the Way at the 11th Annual Athens Model United Nations

Congratulations to members of the ACS MUN Team who helped make the 11th Annual Athens MUN a big success. Six of our students, more than any other school, were selected in key leadership positions for this year’s conference: Dorelina Spiliopoulos spearheaded the conference as the Secretary General, Stephanie Xintara led the General Assembly as the President of the GA, Julia Tavlas was the Chair of the Security Council, Chris Parskakis was the Deputy Chair to the Security Council, Ioannis Kremitsas chaired the Human Rights Council, and Joan Wang chaired the Special Political and Decolonization Committee.

Thank you to the AMUN organizing committee for making the conference possible. Over the past three years under the advisement of David Nelson and Rannelle McCoy, ACS students have actively participated in the Deutsche Schule Athens Model United Nations (DSAMUN), The Hague Model United Nations (THIMUN), Georgetown Qatar Model United Nations, (QMUN), and the Athens Model United Nations (AMUN).

The combined experience made possible by these conferences has opened doors to our students. A special tribute goes out to our graduating seniors, Dorelina, Stephanie, Julia, Chris, Kate, Jennifer, Inesa, Megan, and Joan, who have invested countless hours into the success of the program. You represent the best of our MUN team. This year’s ACS delegates to the 2008 AMUN represented the countries of China and Belgium: Selina Choi (9), Louise Norring (10), Sofia Economopoulos (11), Thea Karakalos (9), Kate Barela (12), Ema Winstead (11), Christos Kampouridis (10) and Olympia Filippeli (10).
