The event, which took place on Friday, January 27 at 8:30 p.m. at the Taverna Mouries in Aghia Paraskevi, lasted till early morning (!) with the guests dancing the night away (- DJs were our own John P. & Ino K. who were playing fabulous sets throughout the evening.)
The New Year's Vassilopitta was ceremoniously cut after midnight; and the drawing that took place, was a blast and lucky for many of us !

While the holiday celebrations provided ample cheer, it was the warmth and affection in everyone’s hearts that truly made this a joyous time!

It is a holiday that focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. It is particularly celebrated in Mexico, where it attains the quality of a National Holiday. The celebration takes place on November 1st and 2nd.
Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skulls and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed and visiting graves with these as gifts.
Some families build altars in their homes. Toys are brought for dead children and bottles of tequila for adults.
It is as a parody of a Mexican upper-class female. It is a striking image of a costumed female with a skeleton face. It is an icon of the Day of the Dead.
Calavera—the skull or skeleton—is the number one symbol for the Days of the Dead. But it is not presented to terrorize. Instead, the calavera represents the playfulness of the Dead, as they mimic the Living and frolic amongst us.
You see La Calavera in baked goods and sugar candies— 'calaveras de azucar'
Made from a sugar paste cast in molds, the candy skulls of the Days of the Dead are decorated with colorful foil eyes and icing.
Those with a distinctive talent for writing sometimes create short poems, called calaveras ("skulls"), mocking epitaphs of friends, describing interesting habits and attitudes or funny anecdotes.
Newspapers dedicate calaveras to public figures, with cartoons of skeletons in the style of the famous calaveras.
The advanced Spanish IB B level and AP students have created very funny “literary calaveras” dedicated to different teachers and/or friends.
]]>On Wednesday, October 26, 2011 ACS Athens’ students’ achievements in the realms of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character were honored by their induction into the National Honor Society.
An honor such as this was a wonderful way for our school and community to recognize and celebrate the choices, and sometimes the sacrifices, our students make.

"How to" processes were discussed regarding: filling out applications, taking and sending standardized tests to universities, financial aid, writing essays and much more. The presentation was conducted using role play with one counselor playing themselves, the other playing the student and another being a parent. The method used provided a lot of important information in a relaxed, fun atmosphere and judging from parent/student comments, it was an effective way to retain and use the information needed.

The music, the colorful posters and sign-up tables, as well as a very warm and sunny day seem to have helped in making the event a success. Students chose from over 35 Interest groups that included topics such as : chess & board games, film & media, creative writing, web technologies, etc.
Many thanks to everyone for making this happen, but especially to Ms. Pelonis and her team for organizing the event.
