UN Day - "Greening the Blue" - Middle School Actions

Dear Parents/Guardians,

On Monday, October 24, 2011, the ACS Athens Middle School will be involved in the celebration of the United Nations. The UN Day is an annual event in the Middle School that, in accordance with our ACS Athens belief statement, allows for our students to gain possession of a strong sense of civic responsibility and an ethic of service which is fundamental to effective global citizenship.

The theme of the day this year will be Greening the Blue and will focus on forests as 2011 is the Year of the Forests. On that day, students will learn about the work of the “Village Project” that ACS Athens has been involved in. In addition, students will become more aware about actions that sustainably manage the world’s forests.

On that day, students are asked to come to school with a waste-free lunch

Students will also be given a short reflection to be filled over the weekend. Their reflections will be submitted to their Block 5 teachers on Monday morning.

The schedule for the day is the following:

Periods 5 and 6:Students attend their regularly scheduled classes

Lunch:Students participate by bringing a waste-free lunch (optional)

Periods 7 and 8:Students will be divided into groups to work on the UN Day goals

We are looking forward to a great day through which students will exhibit responsible global citizenship.

Sincerely,
