Co Curricular Activities

The English Department sponsors co-curricular activities that help students apply the language arts skills that they are learning in the classroom.

A highlight at the elementary school is the annual fifth grade play.

The Forensics Team offers high school and middle school students the opportunity to compete every year with students from private schools all over Greece in the Pan-Hellenic Forensics Tournament. After months of coaching and practice, students participate in a variety of public-speaking events: impromptu speaking, oratory, debate, group discussion, oral interpretation of literature and duet acting.

Students in the high school also have the opportunity to show off their writing skills by contributing to the literary magazine and the Blue and Gold student newspaper.

Each year the Department recommends one student from Grade 11 to compete in the Junior Writing Contest sponsored by the U.S.-based National Council of Teachers of English. ACS entrants have regularly been among the winners of this contest, which is open to all Juniors from American schools throughout the world.

Students from Grades 6 – 12 are encouraged by the Department to participate in the Summer Reading Program. The Department provides annotated lists of book titles for students of various ages and offers incentives for students who participate.
